Total War: Shogun II (2011): Sengoku era japan, has 2 expansions that can be seen as stand alone games: Fall of the Samurai (about the time period where Japan uses gunpowder weaponry and has a civil war between pro- and contra-western factions) and Rise of the Samurai (time period of the 'Genpei War' which culminated in the first shogunate and the rise of samurai as a ruling class) Napoleon: Total War (2010): Europe, North Africa and the Middle East during the Napoleonic era (name kinda gives it away) Medieval II: Total War (2006): Medieval Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, also seen as a 'classic' and is pretty much an updated version of Medieval I with more features, better graphics, ect.Įmpire: Total War (2009): Primarily Europe, North Africa and large parts of Asia (I say primarily as the map is all over the place honestly), time period is the 18th century meaning battles will be fought with muskets and cannons (there's also melee units and cavalry, but the main part is gunpowder units) Rome: Total War (2004): Roman Republic period, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, seen as a TW 'classic' Medieval: Total War (2002): Medieval Europe, North Africa and the Middle East Shogun: Total War (2000): Sengoku-period Japan

Here is a list (in order of when the games came out) of all the Total War games to date: Most of the games focus on the 'European' history (with parts of the Middle East and North Africa), but there are some exceptions like Shogun I and II (Japan) and the up and coming 'Total War Three Kingdoms' (China). A recent addition to this kind of broad categorisation is the addition of fantasy with the Warhammer trilogy (of which the third game will be coming out later). There's been many different TW games and they mostly focus on different timelines or at least different regions (Shogun and Thrones of Britannia being an example of 'region'). This makes it so that the games have a high replayability value and will always be able to give you some bang for your buck. In any of the TW games you will get to choose from multiple factions to play as, each with their own quirks, troops, effects, ect.
